The Walbrook
London
Architect: Foster and Partners
Client: Minerva plc
Project completion: 2010
The Walbrook is a mixed-use development at the junction of Walbrook and Cannon Street in the City of London, and includes office, trading and retail accommodation. The adjacent Church Yard at St Swithuns is of historic significance, and formed part of the overall scheme.
The new 10-storey structure has an unusual façade incorporating a colonnade that wraps around its ground floor unifying the streets on three sides. Retail units are provided at ground level with the option for financial trading facilities on two upper levels and open plan offices above. The building was designed to offer tenants ultra modern and high tech facilities.
The churchyard was a major challenge to the designers requiring improved public access without disturbing the graves. The end outcome is a welcoming and inclusive environment for tourists as well as local office workers.
