Chelsea College of Arts
Chelsea
Architect: Allies and Morrison
Client: Chelsea College of Arts
Project completion: 2007
David Bonnett Associates worked closely with Allies and Morrison as access consultants for the remodelling and extension of the former Royal Army Medical College Grade II listed buildings at Millbank to provide a new home for the Chelsea College of Arts. The College was previously housed in a variety of premises dispersed across four sites in two London boroughs. The new scheme consolidated its activities onto this important site, adjacent to Tate Britain. The project also accommodates a new gallery as well as the university’s secretariat and headquarters functions.
Special access features / innovation
Step-free access was provided throughout the site by careful positioning of discreet platform lifts in sensitive parts of the building. The issue of escape for disabled people was successfully addressed so that all students, visitors and staff could evacuate the buildings in the event of an emergency.
