Who are we

David Bonnett Associates is an architectural access consultancy. We provide advice on Inclusive Access to clients and architects working on projects ranging from small visitor centres and landscape schemes to large-scale masterplans, transport interchanges and residential developments.

David Bonnett Associates brings knowledge of access standards and legislation and an understanding of the needs of people with disabilities to all schemes. Most of all it fosters an approach that finds architectural solutions to complement the overall design, while meeting what might be an eclectic range of aspirations and requirements.

Many of the schemes we advise on win awards for both the quality of the architecture and the accessibility of the scheme.

Inclusive Design

David Bonnett Associates believes that the concept of ‘Inclusive Design’ is an essential component in the creation of good architecture. Furthermore, Inclusive Design should achieve its purpose unobtrusively without proclaiming itself as specifically designed for disabled people.

Achieving good accessibility requires a team approach, involving building designers, operational managers and users. We provide balanced responses to potentially competing duties and obligations; in particular where conservation, security, and safety issues are concerned.

An accessible environment is a legal requirement as well as a social expectation. In the belief that access is a measurable aspect of design we have developed an audit method to measure accessibility against both regulatory and best practice standards.

We regularly review our assessment criteria to meet rising expectations. We do this in a pragmatic manner, ensuring that neither architectural nor heritage expectations are forfeited in the process. By designing inclusively, we create places that are user friendly, of high quality and have a durable and positive impact on the wider community as well as on the environment.
